Modi Vows Strong Response After Humiliating Defeat by Pakistan

NEW DELHI: Two days after a significant military setback at the hands of Pakistan, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his silence on Monday,

vowing a firm response to any future terrorist attacks. In a televised address to the nation—his first since the hostilities erupted—Modi also warned that India would not tolerate what he called “nuclear blackmail” from Islamabad.

The recent escalation, triggered by an April 22 attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, led to the worst flare-up between the two nuclear-armed rivals since the 1999 Kargil conflict. India accused Pakistan of orchestrating the attack, a claim Islamabad has strongly denied.

Over four days of intense fighting—including jet fighter sorties, missile strikes, drone incursions, and artillery exchanges—both nations edged dangerously close to all-out war. A ceasefire, reportedly brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump over the weekend, appeared to be holding on Monday.

Speaking at the White House, Trump claimed credit for defusing the crisis. “We stopped a nuclear conflict… millions of people could have been killed. So I’m very proud of that,” he told reporters.

Modi, in his address, accused Pakistan of choosing confrontation over cooperation in the fight against terrorism. “If another terrorist attack against India is carried out, a strong response will follow,” he declared.

The region remains tense, as international observers urge both countries to exercise restraint and reengage through diplomatic channels.
