MIRPUR: Authorities carried out a targeted raid at the home of Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) chief Mehran Arshad Khawaja in Dadyal tehsil, Mirpur district, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), resulting in the recovery of a drone, weapons, and other suspicious items.
The operation was initiated based on intelligence reports suggesting illicit activities at the location. During the raid, Shahid Aslam, an employee connected to Mehran Arshad Khawaja, was detained for further questioning.
In his initial statement, the employee revealed that two ambulances had been used to transport equipment and materials in preparation for a planned protest sit-in. He further alleged that weapons, ammunition, and other items were secretly moved to Muzaffarabad using these ambulances.
The employee claimed that Mehran had taken possession of five Kalashnikov rifles, two 12-bore shotguns, and a significant stash of ammunition. He also indicated that stones, glass bottles, and slingshots were employed during the protest activities.
Additionally, the employee disclosed that a substantial amount of cash, including funds allegedly supplied by another JAAC leader, Latif Dar, was transported. He also accused the authorities of moving police shelling guns, confiscated during the September 29 march, to Muzaffarabad via ambulances. Furthermore, he stated that around two kilograms of hashish were taken to the protest site.
Investigators are also probing reports that several individuals with connections to criminal and narcotics networks were present with Mehran during the protests.
On Tuesday, the AJK government announced a reward of Rs10 million for information leading to the arrest of four wanted JAAC leaders. The official notification emphasized that anyone providing credible information would remain anonymous, and the reward would be awarded upon successful apprehension.
The wanted individuals named are Shaukat Nawaz Mir, Umar Nazir Kashmiri, Mehran Arshad Khawaja, and Sardar Aman.
