Man files Rs178.7 million compensation claim over eye injury in BRT Red Line accident

KARACHI: A Karachi resident has approached a court seeking Rs178.7 million in compensation after allegedly losing an eye in an accident linked to the ongoing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line construction project.

According to the petition, the claimant has requested legal action against the project’s director and the contractor, holding them responsible for the injuries sustained during the incident.

The petitioner has asked the court to direct the Sindh government and the BRT Red Line authorities to compensate him for medical treatment, permanent disability and other financial losses resulting from the accident.

Court documents state that the incident occurred shortly after the petitioner returned to Pakistan from Hajj in 2025.

The petitioner’s lawyer argued that construction barriers placed along University Road were not fitted with proper reflectors, warning signs or other safety measures, making the route hazardous for motorists and pedestrians.

The petition claims the accident caused the loss of the petitioner’s eye along with severe facial injuries, alleging that inadequate safety arrangements at the construction site directly contributed to the incident.

It further contends that the BRT Red Line project failed to adopt sufficient public safety precautions during construction, exposing road users to avoidable dangers.

The court has been requested to award damages amounting to Rs178.7 million to cover medical expenses, long-term disability and other losses allegedly caused by negligence.

Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah carried out an early-morning inspection of several key infrastructure projects across Karachi, including the BRT Red Line corridor, Shahrah-e-Bhutto and Pahalwan Goth Road.

During the visit, he instructed officials to speed up work while maintaining quality standards and transparency. He also directed that all mixed-traffic lanes along the Red Line corridor be completed within the next two months.

The chief minister reviewed progress from Peoples Chowrangi to Safoora Chowrangi before inspecting rehabilitation work at Pahalwan Goth. He later visited Shahrah-e-Bhutto, from the Bheem Pura flyover to Kathore, where he issued further instructions to project teams on-site.
