KARACHI: Two people lost their lives and two others were injured after a speeding truck struck pedestrians near Jamali Bridge on the Super Highway on Sunday, according to rescue officials.
The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where two victims, who were in critical condition, died from their injuries while being transported for medical treatment.
Eyewitnesses initially claimed that the truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. However, SSP Zubair Nazeer Shaikh later confirmed that the driver, identified as Shehbaz, was apprehended at the site of the accident. Police also took the truck into custody and shifted both the suspect and the vehicle to the police station for further investigation.
The incident has once again drawn attention to restrictions imposed on heavy vehicles in Karachi. Last year, traffic authorities banned the movement of dumpers and water tankers across the city following a series of fatal accidents.
DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah stated that only heavy vehicles equipped with GPS trackers linked to the traffic police are permitted to operate. He noted that while some vehicles have installed trackers, several owners have failed to provide police with access.
He added that even exempted heavy vehicles are only allowed to travel during designated hours, while any vehicle operating without an approved tracker will be impounded during traffic inspections.
