Karachi launches crackdown on unregistered vehicles

KARACHI: The Inspector General of Police (IG) Sindh, Javed Alam Odho, announced a robust crackdown on motorists operating without proper number plates, stating that offenders will now face criminal charges instead of fines.

A citywide initiative is currently in progress to identify and apprehend vehicles lacking registration plates, with authorities utilizing the city’s expanding network of Safe City surveillance cameras. In this effort, the number of CCTV cameras across Karachi has been increased from 30,000 to 40,000.

IG Odho also called on business owners to enhance their security measures by installing additional cameras to aid ongoing monitoring efforts. He mentioned that e-challans in Sindh have been synchronized with those in Punjab, where recent penalties have been heightened.

He highlighted that the expanded surveillance infrastructure has played a significant role in solving approximately 70% of crimes in the city.

Addressing the issue of extortion, Odho reported a decrease in such cases, with only a handful recently recorded in Karachi’s Central District. Authorities are actively pursuing suspected extortion rings, including individuals believed to be operating from abroad. Several suspects have been issued red warrants, and arrests are anticipated soon. Plans are also underway to target local facilitators aiding these criminal groups.

The IG warned those involved in aerial firing, emphasizing that strict action would be taken against offenders. He stated that if aerial firing occurs at a wedding, not only the groom but also his parents, along with those responsible for firing shots, will face arrest.
