KARACHI: Police have uncovered an elaborate scheme in which a Karachi businessman allegedly murdered an innocent man and attempted to fake his own death in a bid to escape billions of rupees in financial liabilities.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) West Tariq Mastoi said the prime suspect, Zeeshan, was taken into custody after investigators unraveled the plot. According to police, he had conspired with an accomplice to stage his own death and mislead both authorities and creditors.
The investigation began after a charred body was discovered inside a vehicle near Zero Point in Surjani Town. Initially believed to be Zeeshan’s remains, forensic analysis and biometric identification later confirmed that the victim was actually Qurban, a resident of Muzaffargarh who had reportedly been missing for an extended period.
Police allege that Qurban was deliberately killed so his body could be passed off as that of the trader, creating the impression that Zeeshan had died.
Investigators revealed that Zeeshan, who operated a rice trading business, was burdened with debts exceeding Rs5.5 billion, allegedly owed to nearly 60 to 70 creditors. Authorities believe the fake death was intended to help him avoid repayment.
During the investigation, officers recovered Zeeshan’s mobile phone from the burned vehicle. The device contained a recorded video in which he claimed that his family members had no connection to his business dealings.
According to SSP Mastoi, the suspect attempted to avoid capture by altering his appearance after disappearing. However, police tracked him down using technical surveillance and digital evidence before placing him under arrest.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, and detectives are continuing to question the suspects to determine the full extent of the conspiracy and identify any additional individuals who may have been involved.
