JI To Approach SC Over Postponement Of LBEs In Karachi, Stages City Wide Protest On October 20

Karachi: Jamat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Amir Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman has announced to approach the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) over postponing of local bodies elections in Karachi for third time by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The JI Ameer further announced that his party will stage protests all across the city on October 20 on Thursday.

Earlier today, ECP postponed the second phase of local bodies elections in seven districts of Karachi for third time.

The ECP has cancelled the local bodies elections after a letter sent by the federal government

The decision was taken in a high level meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja.
The huddle under the CEC reviewed the letter sent by the federal government.

Sindh government had demanded the ECP deployment of 16000 security personnel for ensuring security in the local bodies elections in seven districts of Karachi under the second phase of local bodies elections.

As per the ECP, the local bodies elections were postponed owing to unavailability of security personnel.

The election body has also convened its meeting after 15 days.

Local Bodies Elections In Karachi Postponed For Third Time

The second phase of the polls was scheduled to be held in the province’s Karachi and Hyderabad divisions on July 24.

However, heavy downpours and subsequent urban flooding in various parts of the districts forced the ECP to postpone the polls.
The ECP had rescheduled the polls in Karachi and Hyderabad for August 28. However, later it decided to delay the elections in nine districts of the province once against till October 23.

The first phase of local government elections was held in 14 districts of Sindh in June 26.
