Israel warns Türkiye against ‘Dangerous Adventures’ in Syria

JERUSALEM: Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of leading Türkiye toward “dangerous adventures” in Syria, following Israel’s recent strike on a Syrian airbase.

The warning came after Israel targeted the Abu al-Duhur airbase on Tuesday, amid Israeli concerns that Syria could alter existing security arrangements by allowing Turkish forces to deploy at the facility.

In a statement posted on X, Katz said Israel would not allow any country or entity to threaten its security, issuing a pointed warning over potential Turkish military activity inside Syria.

However, Syria has rejected claims of a planned Turkish military build-up at the base.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani said Damascus had informed Israel that there were no plans to establish a Turkish military base at Abu al-Duhur.

Speaking to Axios, al-Shaibani said the airbase was instead being rehabilitated for use by the Syrian Air Force.

“There was no intention to establish a Turkish base there, nor to create a permanent Turkish military presence or deploy Turkish troops at the site,” he said.

The exchange highlights growing tensions over Türkiye’s potential role in Syria, as Israel closely monitors military developments near its borders and remains opposed to any deployment it considers a threat to its national security.
