Israel agrees to U.S. ceasefire proposal for Gaza as Hamas reviews terms

WASHINGTON: Israel has reportedly agreed to a U.S.-proposed ceasefire plan for Gaza, White House

U.S. officials indicated that, Israel has given preliminary approval, though Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office did not officially confirm this.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that, Israel has signed off on the proposal, which includes a 60-day ceasefire and the expansion of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Hamas, the Palestinian militant group controlling Gaza, said it is currently studying the plan. Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri commented that the terms largely echo Israel’s position and do not address Hamas’s key demands, such as ending the war, Israeli troop withdrawal, or the release of all hostages.

The conflict, which erupted after a devastating Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, has resulted in over 54,000 Palestinian deaths and significant destruction in Gaza. Israel maintains that Hamas must disarm and that all hostages must be returned before ending the war.

Meanwhile, aid efforts are intensifying amid international pressure. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, supported by the U.S. and endorsed by Israel, expanded its aid distribution to a third site, providing approximately 1.8 million meals so far. Despite challenges, including chaotic scenes at aid distribution points, the operation aims to reach millions at risk of famine.

U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff indicated optimism about reaching a long-term peaceful resolution, hinting at upcoming discussions around a ceasefire. The international community continues to call for an end to the conflict and increased humanitarian relief efforts.
