TEHRAN: Iran and the United States exchanged fresh military strikes for a second consecutive day on Thursday, with Tehran launching missile and drone attacks on American military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait in retaliation for new US bombardments.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted strategic facilities at the Arifjan and Ali Al Salem bases in Kuwait, as well as the Juffair and Sheikh Isa bases in Bahrain. The Guards warned that any further US military action would trigger attacks on additional American bases across the region.
Air raid sirens sounded across Bahrain’s capital, Manama, before multiple explosions were heard, while Kuwaiti authorities confirmed their air defence systems intercepted incoming missiles and drones.
Kuwait’s military said the explosions were caused by successful interceptions of hostile projectiles but did not identify the source.
Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared that the Strait of Hormuz would only reopen under “Iranian arrangements,” warning Washington that any future attack would be met with a direct response.
Meanwhile, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that its latest operation struck nearly 90 military targets across Iran, including air defence systems, missile and drone storage facilities, and other military infrastructure. The Pentagon said the strikes were intended to weaken Iran’s capability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Health Ministry reported that two days of US attacks had killed 14 people and injured 78 others. Officials said 47 of the wounded remain hospitalised while the rest have been discharged after treatment.
The attacks also disrupted transport inside Iran, with rail services between Tehran and Mashhad suspended after strikes reportedly damaged infrastructure along the route. Iranian authorities blamed the United States and Israel for targeting bridges leading to Mashhad, where the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is scheduled to be buried.
Khamenei, who was killed in US-Israeli strikes on February 28, is being laid to rest in his hometown following funeral ceremonies held in Tehran and the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.
Despite an existing ceasefire and a memorandum of understanding aimed at achieving a lasting peace, the latest exchange of attacks has renewed fears of a wider regional confrontation.
