MOSCOW: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Moscow on Tuesday on the sidelines of an energy forum, Iranian state media reported.
According to Iranian state television, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and stressed the need to expand political and economic cooperation between Tehran and Doha.
Both sides also highlighted opportunities to strengthen ties by making better use of their existing cooperation potential, the broadcaster said.
The report did not mention whether the leaders discussed the ongoing Middle East war, which erupted following US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. Tehran retaliated with missile and drone attacks across the region, including Qatar.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of a summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in the Russian capital.
Qatar has been involved in diplomatic mediation efforts in recent months aimed at securing an end to the conflict, which has spread to several parts of the region.
Pezeshkian is also scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin later on Tuesday.
In early October, Putin said Moscow was ready to contribute to mediation efforts aimed at ending the war.
