Iran President admits country faces ‘Many Problems’ amid fresh US sanctions

TEHRAN: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday acknowledged that the country was grappling with “many problems”, as Washington intensified economic pressure through a fresh wave of sanctions aimed at further isolating Iran.

“I understand that we have many problems in society right now. We are trying to prevent them as much as we can,” Pezeshkian said in a speech broadcast on state television.

His remarks came days after the United States announced a new sanctions campaign and vowed to bring about the “collapse” of the Iranian regime, nearly six months after the outbreak of war between the two countries.

Responding to the US move, Pezeshkian said Iran was facing a “full-scale economic, military and security war”, which he attributed to the policies of US President Donald Trump.

“He says he is imposing the most crushing and terrifying sanctions on Iran,” the Iranian president said.

Iran’s government has faced repeated waves of protests in recent years, with public anger often fuelled by worsening economic conditions, soaring inflation, currency volatility and a sharp decline in purchasing power.

Late last December, demonstrations initially triggered by the rising cost of living expanded into wider protests against the country’s leadership.

Authorities said more than 3,000 people were killed during the unrest and blamed the United States and Israel for orchestrating the violence. Foreign-based NGOs, however, accused Iranian authorities of carrying out an indiscriminate crackdown that they said left thousands dead.

Pezeshkian said his government was working to address the country’s economic and social challenges.

“We are striving with all our hearts to overcome inflation, livelihood problems and unemployment, and to secure the future of the people so that they can live with dignity and pride,” he said.
