ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was shifted back to Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail after undergoing a medical examination at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), where doctors reportedly found him fit to remain in custody.
The former prime minister was brought to the Islamabad hospital from Adiala Jail’s Gate No. 1 under strict security arrangements, with a heavy police escort accompanying him during the transfer.
A six-member panel of specialist doctors carried out a detailed medical examination of Imran Khan. Following the assessment, the doctors concluded that his condition did not require continued hospitalisation and that he could remain in prison.
According to jail sources, Khan was subsequently transported back to Adiala Jail and shifted to his cell after spending several hours at the hospital overnight.
A PTI spokesperson also confirmed to the media that the party founder had returned to prison after undergoing the medical check-up.
Earlier, Islamabad Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, accompanied by senior police officials, had visited Shifa International Hospital to inspect security arrangements ahead of Khan’s expected arrival. A substantial police deployment was also made around the hospital, where preparations had been completed for his examination and possible admission.
The Supreme Court had earlier directed the authorities to transfer Imran Khan to a medical facility within two days after taking his health concerns into consideration. The federal government subsequently filed a review petition against the order.
However, the Supreme Court registrar’s office returned the review petition on Thursday morning after raising certain objections.
Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has also suggested the possibility of Imran Khan being sent abroad if medical experts recommend treatment outside Pakistan.
Imran Khan, 73, has remained in custody since August 2023 following convictions in several cases, which he and his party maintain are politically motivated. The former prime minister has faced a series of legal proceedings since his government was removed through a no-confidence vote in April 2022.
