Imaan Mazari, husband challenge IHC order in Supreme Court

LAHORE: Rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Chattha, have moved the Supreme Court against an Islamabad High Court (IHC) order relating to their plea for a stay on trial proceedings in an anti-terrorism case.

In their petition, the couple argued that the trial proceedings should be suspended immediately, warning that otherwise their pending application before the high court would become ineffective.

They alleged that the trial court had proceeded hastily, without providing them sufficient time to prepare their case, and recorded statements of prosecution witnesses in a single day.

The petition also argued that removing security barriers did not amount to terrorism. The applicants alleged that the case was aimed at harassing them and subjecting them to political victimisation, claiming that the proceedings were intended to keep them incarcerated.

On October 19, the IHC rejected their request for an interim stay in petitions seeking the removal of anti-terrorism provisions from the case. However, the high court issued notices to the relevant parties on a separate application seeking suspension of the trial proceedings.
