ISLAMABAD: Torrential rains and flash floods continued to batter parts of Pakistan on Tuesday, leaving at least 12 people dead and 15 injured in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a fresh weather and flood alert for several regions until July 24.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), most fatalities occurred after roofs and walls of homes collapsed during intense rainfall. The victims included six men, one woman and five children, while the injured comprised eight men, two women and five children.
The PDMA’s initial assessment reported damage to 14 houses in districts including Peshawar, Khyber, Torghar, Mardan, Mansehra, Abbottabad and Kurram, where rescue teams continue relief operations.
In Peshawar, heavy rain also disrupted public transport after water accumulated on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes and underpasses, forcing authorities to suspend bus services until conditions improved.
NDMA warns of flood risk across Pakistan
The NDMA cautioned that persistent rainfall could trigger flash floods and urban flooding in several parts of the country over the coming days.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, rivers and streams in Hunza, Shimshal, Chapursan, Kilik, Shigar, Shyok and Hushe are at risk of flooding.
In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, rising water levels are expected in the Jhelum, Neelum, Poonch and Mahl rivers, along with Betar Nullah, Bhimber Nullah, the Kanshi River and other tributaries.
For Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, authorities warned of possible flooding in the Chitral, Kabul, Swat and Panjkora rivers, as well as several seasonal streams across districts including Khyber, Kurram, Orakzai, Kohat, Bannu, Karak, Hangu, Lakki Marwat, North and South Waziristan, Bajaur, Mohmand, Mansehra, Buner and Swabi.
The NDMA also forecast flooding in northeastern Balochistan, while warning of rising water levels in the Chenab River at Marala and the Jhelum River upstream of Mangla. Increased water releases from India’s Thein, Pong and Bhakra dams could also raise flows in the Ravi and Sutlej rivers.
Urban flooding remains a concern in several Punjab cities, including Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Khushab, Sialkot, Gujrat, Narowal, Lahore, Okara, Chakwal and Attock. District administrations have been instructed to closely monitor river conditions, deploy rescue teams in advance and take preventive measures in vulnerable areas.
Kaghan bridge damaged, transport concerns grow
Heavy rainfall has severely damaged the main bridge over Siri Nullah in Kaghan Valley, with floodwaters eroding its foundations. Residents warned that the structure could collapse if emergency repair work is not carried out soon.
Four held for violating Section 144
Authorities in Mansehra arrested four people for collecting timber from the Kunhar River in violation of Section 144. Police registered cases against the suspects under Section 188.
Chenab flooding threatens villages
Floodwaters in the Chenab River continued to inundate low-lying areas of Chiniot and Phalia, where river erosion submerged parts of Mianwal village, including its remaining mosque.
Nearby villages, including Doham Syedan, Wad Syedan and Sahamal, also faced rising water levels as inflows increased.
At Head Qadirabad, officials recorded an inflow of 109,721 cusecs and an outflow of 90,196 cusecs, warning that medium to high flooding is likely over the next 24 hours.
