LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar has approached a Lahore court seeking bail in the Jinnah House attack case related to the May 9 violence.
The court issued notices on the bail petition filed by his counsel, Iskandar Zulqarnain Advocate.
In his plea, Hammad maintained that he was arrested nearly three years after the May 9 incidents and requested the court to grant him bail.
The investigation officer (IO), however, informed the court that the PTI leader had remained a proclaimed offender in cases registered over the May 9 unrest for three years.
The case relates to the attack on Jinnah House in Lahore, with an FIR registered at Sarwar Road Police Station.
Earlier, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore had declined the police request for an extension in Hammad’s physical remand and directed that he be sent to jail on judicial remand.
ATC Administrative Judge Sardar Muhammad Akram Khan announced the decision after the prosecution sought additional custody, stating that a polygraph test of the suspect was still pending.
Opposing the request, Hammad’s lawyer, Abu Zar Niazi, argued that his client should be placed on judicial remand if investigators intended to conduct the test. Referring to a high court ruling, he maintained that a suspect could only undergo a polygraph examination with his consent.
Hammad also objected to the prosecution’s request, saying he should not be penalised for the investigators’ lack of preparation. He added that he would refuse the test if the law permitted him to do so.
The PTI leader had been produced before the ATC after completing 12 days of physical remand.
