Gulf Nations on high alert following U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities

DUBAI/RIYADH:  Gulf countries, which host numerous U.S. military installations, have heightened their alert levels amid escalating tensions after U.S. military actions targeting Iran’s nuclear sites.

President Donald Trump announced that U.S. forces had “destroyed” key Iranian nuclear facilities using large bunker-busting bombs in the early hours of Sunday, warning Tehran of harsher consequences if it refuses to pursue peace.In response, Saudi Arabia, the world’s leading oil exporter, increased its security readiness, according to two sources familiar with the situation. Meanwhile, Bahrain advised residents to steer clear of major roads as tensions rise.

Kuwait’s defense council has announced it will operate continuously and has established shelters within government buildings, the official news agency reported.Iran has previously issued warnings that any attack by the U.S. could provoke counterstrikes against American assets in the region, including military bases.

Bahrain hosts the headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, and U.S. military bases are also situated in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, reflecting the strategic importance of the region amidst the current crisis.
