KARACHI: The Karachi Goods Carriers Association (KGCA) has strongly opposed the government’s latest increase in petrol and diesel prices, warning that it will call a nationwide wheel-jam strike if the decision is not reversed within 24 hours.
Speaking at a press conference, KGCA President Malik Sher Khan, accompanied by General Secretary Nadeem Akhtar Arain, Vice Chairman Ayaz Khan, and Vice President Ayaz Khan, said the transport sector continues to bear the burden of rising operating costs despite being the backbone of the country’s trade and logistics network.
Sher Khan argued that frequent fuel price hikes have pushed transporters into financial hardship. He maintained that although international oil prices have declined, the relief has not been passed on to transporters or consumers, resulting in higher freight charges and increased costs for businesses.
General Secretary Nadeem Akhtar Arain criticized the government’s fuel pricing policy, saying it has negatively affected both the transport industry and the wider economy.
He further alleged that truck drivers and transport operators in Punjab, Balochistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and other regions are facing excessive inspections, hefty fines, alleged demands for bribes, and harassment by various authorities, hampering transport operations and impacting their livelihoods.
The association warned that failure to address its concerns could lead to a nationwide suspension of goods transportation, disrupting the movement of import and export cargo through Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and Gwadar Port.
