GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission (GBEC) has dismissed as false a notification being circulated online that claims election candidate Riyaz Akbar has been disqualified.
According to an official statement, the commission confirmed that the alleged notification was fabricated and was never issued by any authorised office of the Election Commission. Officials stated that the fake document unlawfully carried the name and forged signature of the Provincial Election Commissioner, describing the act as a serious violation of the law.
The commission announced that legal action would be initiated against those responsible for creating and disseminating the forged notification. It also appealed to voters, political parties, and media organisations to verify information through official Election Commission channels before sharing or publishing it.
Emphasising its commitment to fair and transparent elections, the GBEC reiterated that only announcements released through its official platforms should be regarded as authentic.
Meanwhile, polling continues across Gilgit-Baltistan for the general elections on 24 seats of the regional assembly. Voting started in the morning and is scheduled to conclude at 5pm. More than 958,000 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots, while 403 candidates are competing across 24 constituencies in what is being described as a closely contested election.
