KARACHI: Rail traffic on the main railway line in Sindh remained suspended after a freight train derailed near Wahab Shah railway station in Matiari district, forcing Pakistan Railways to halt several passenger services and launch restoration operations.
According to railway officials, 17 wagons of a coal-carrying freight train travelling from Karachi to Yousafwala left the tracks, damaging both the up and down railway lines. Authorities estimate that repair work could take up to 24 hours, depending on the extent of the damage.
Emergency response teams, including two relief trains and railway engineering staff, were dispatched to the site soon after the accident. Crews are working to remove the derailed wagons and restore the damaged track so train operations can resume.
Officials said the derailment severely affected a long stretch of railway line, with tracks damaged at multiple locations, making restoration work more challenging.
The disruption left several passenger trains stranded at stations across Sindh. The Karakoram Express was stopped at Hyderabad, Allama Iqbal Express at Kotri, and Pakistan Express at Landhi. Meanwhile, Tezgam Express remained at Drigh Road station, while Millat Express and Fareed Express were held at Karachi Cantonment station.
Railway authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported in the incident.
Earlier, trains were halted at multiple stations, including Tando Adam, Hyderabad, Karachi and Rohri, as officials suspended traffic on both tracks to facilitate recovery work.
Sukkur Divisional Superintendent Farman Ghani said relief trains from Rohri and Kotri had been sent to the accident site. He noted that the derailment had caused extensive damage to the railway infrastructure, adding that engineers were working to clear the line and restore normal train services as quickly as possible.
