KANGANPUR: Five people from the same family died after becoming seriously ill following a meal of kheer in Kanganpur, Kasur district, police and local sources said Thursday.
The victims reportedly suffered severe stomach pain and vomiting after eating the rice pudding. Local accounts say the kheer was made at home and that a lizard may have fallen into it. The father is said to have removed the animal before the family ate. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the dish was contaminated or what caused the deaths.
The deceased were identified as 28-year-old Asif, 25-year-old Nazim and 15-year-old Amanat, along with their father, Qasim Ali, and mother, Hasina Bibi.
Rescue teams responded to the emergency, provided initial assistance and took the family members to hospital. All five later died. The incident has left residents of the area in mourning.
Punjab Law Minister Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan has requested a report from the Kasur deputy commissioner and called for a thorough inquiry to establish what happened. Police are also investigating.
