TEHRAN: Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Thursday to participate in the funeral ceremony of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as part of Pakistan’s high-level official delegation.
Upon landing in the Iranian capital, Field Marshal Asim Munir was received by Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, along with senior Iranian military and government officials. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was also present to welcome him.
His visit reflects Pakistan’s participation in the state funeral, with the country’s leadership extending condolences to Iran and expressing solidarity with its people following the death of the Iranian leader.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif departed Islamabad for a one-day visit to Tehran to attend the funeral ceremonies. He is leading Pakistan’s delegation, which includes National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Atta Tarar, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PPP Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari, and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.
During the visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz is expected to convey condolences on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan and reaffirm Islamabad’s support for Iran during its national mourning.
After concluding his engagements in Tehran, the prime minister will travel to Istanbul for a bilateral visit to Türkiye.
Iran has launched a week-long mourning programme for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with funeral ceremonies beginning in Tehran and additional commemorative events planned in the holy cities of Qom and Mashhad, as well as in Iraq. Leaders and dignitaries from across the region and beyond are attending the funeral to pay their respects.
