ISLAMABAD: Power consumers across Pakistan will receive relief after the federal government announced a reduction of Rs1.99 per unit in electricity tariffs under the quarterly tariff adjustment (QTA) mechanism.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) issued a notification on Tuesday confirming that the revised rates will remain effective from June through August 2026. The adjustment covers the January–March 2026 quarter and is expected to provide consumers with an overall financial benefit of nearly Rs67.17 billion.
The reduction applies to all categories of electricity users, including K-Electric consumers. However, lifeline users, customers under the incremental consumption package, and prepaid consumers will not be eligible for the relief.
According to NEPRA, the decrease is the result of multiple tariff revisions incorporated into the quarterly review process. The move is expected to ease electricity costs for households and businesses facing rising living and operating expenses.
In a separate development, the federal government is preparing to introduce a Solar Wheeling Policy, aimed at expanding access to renewable energy. The proposed framework would enable individuals and businesses to generate solar electricity at one location and utilize the resulting energy credits at another location through the national grid.
The initiative is expected to particularly benefit people who own land in rural areas but reside or run businesses in cities where installing solar systems is either impractical or too costly.
Following a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Usman Shaukat said the premier informed business leaders that work on the solar wheeling framework is underway, with the goal of making renewable energy more accessible and flexible for consumers.
