ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers across Pakistan, including those served by K-Electric in Karachi, may face higher power bills in August as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) reviews a proposal to increase electricity tariffs by Rs1.20 per unit.
The proposed increase has been requested by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) under the monthly Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) mechanism for electricity generated during June. Nepra is holding a public hearing on the application before making a final decision.
According to the CPPA’s submission, hydropower remained the country’s largest source of electricity generation in June, contributing 39% of the total output. Electricity produced from locally mined coal accounted for 10.11%, while imported coal supplied 12.65%. Power generated through imported gas made up 11.02%, and nuclear energy contributed 13.40%.
If the regulator approves the request, the additional fuel cost adjustment will be included in electricity bills issued for August.
Earlier this month, Nepra also approved a Rs0.34 per unit increase in electricity tariffs under the FCA for May. The regulator later issued a notification confirming that the adjustment applied to all electricity distribution companies, including K-Electric, with consumers paying the additional charges through their July electricity bills.
