SHIKARPURE: A tragic incident in Sindh’s Shikarpur district claimed the lives of eight mourners and injured 15 others when a Muharram Alam came into contact with a high-voltage power line during a religious gathering.
The accident took place in Bodo Walisabad village near Dakkhan town, where residents had gathered to observe Muharram rituals commemorating the martyrs of Karbala.
According to officials, the metal Alam accidentally touched an 11,000-volt electricity transmission line while being erected, triggering a powerful electric shock.
Police said the structure lost balance and tilted into the overhead cables, causing fatal electrocution among several participants who were holding it. The incident sparked panic among mourners present at the site.
The deceased were identified as Hidayatullah, Abdul Waheed, Mohammad Khalid, Mohammad Zahid, Shafiq Ahmed, Din Mohammad, Arbab, and Mohammad Hassan. All were members of the local Jaffaria community participating in the ceremony.
Emergency responders, police officials, and local volunteers rushed to the scene and shifted the injured to nearby healthcare facilities. Several critically wounded individuals were later transferred to hospitals in Shikarpur, Larkana, and Sukkur for advanced medical care.
Funeral prayers for the victims were held in the village and attended by a large number of mourners, relatives, and community members. The deceased were later laid to rest amid an atmosphere of grief and mourning.
Authorities have initiated an inquiry into the incident and directed relevant departments to review safety arrangements around religious gatherings to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
