ECP halts by-election for Senate seat from KP

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) barred the authorities from holding by-election for a Senate seat from KP, which were scheduled to be held on April 23.

According to detail, Three-member bench of the ECP heard the petition filed by Jalal Khan.

Counsel for the petitioner, who appeared before the bench, said that PTI stalwart Murad Saeed had been elected as a senator from the constituency, but he did not take oath of his office. “And when he did not take oath, how was he de-notified?” he questioned.

It was only after taking oath, the petitioner argued, that an elected person was deemed to be a member of the House.

He prayed to the election commission to postpone the election so that the ambiguity could be removed.

The commission accepted the petitioner’s request and issued notices to all candidates before adjourning the case’s hearing until May 7.
