Chinese Scholar Victor Gao issues strong warning to India over water politics

WEB DESK: Senior Chinese academic and geopolitical analyst Victor Gao has issued a firm warning to India regarding its plans concerning water management with Pakistan, emphasizing the potential regional repercussions.

During a televised interview, Gao expressed concern over reports that the Narendra Modi government might consider restricting water flow to Pakistan, highlighting China’s position as an upstream nation on shared rivers. He cautioned that such actions could escalate tensions and undermine regional stability.

“Any attempt by India to manipulate water resources as a geopolitical tool will not go unnoticed,” Gao stated. “China, as an upstream country, has a responsibility to uphold regional peace and stability. We will stand firm if our interests and those of Pakistan are threatened.”

Gao underscored the importance of respecting international treaties, particularly the Indus Waters Treaty, and warned that any violation would be viewed as a breach of international law.

He reaffirmed China’s unwavering support for Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing the close ties between Beijing and Islamabad.

The scholar also hinted at possible consequences should India disrupt the water balance, suggesting that China might consider strategic measures involving the Brahmaputra River to safeguard its interests and regional stability.
