RAWALPINDI: Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Army Chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, visited Corps Headquarters Peshawar on Tuesday, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). During his visit, the military’s spokesperson reported that the Field Marshal was briefed on the current security conditions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, ongoing counterterrorism efforts, border security measures, and the readiness of military units operating in the region.
CDF Munir praised the high morale, preparedness, and professionalism of the officers and soldiers, emphasizing their unwavering dedication to protecting the nation and its citizens. He instructed all units to stay alert and uphold the highest levels of operational readiness. The Army Chief reiterated that, with the support of the Pakistani people, the armed forces remain committed to eliminating terrorism and establishing enduring peace and stability across the country.
In a gesture of respect, he laid a floral wreath at Yadgar-e-Shuhada and offered prayers to honor those who sacrificed their lives defending the homeland and combating terrorism. Munir assured that their sacrifices would always be remembered.
Upon his arrival, he was received by the Commander of the Peshawar Corps. The visit followed a recent deadly attack on Kohat’s Police Lines, which resulted in 22 fatalities, including 16 police officers and six civilians, and left over 100 injured. Security forces responded swiftly with an overnight clearance operation involving elite commandos, CTD teams, and other personnel, who successfully cleared key parts of the compound. Security sources confirmed that eight militants were killed during the operation, with the Pakistan Army joining after Fajr prayers to eliminate the last two suicide bombers hiding inside.
In response to recent militant attacks, Pakistan launched ground operations and airstrikes targeting terror hideouts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially along the border with Afghanistan, as announced by the Ministry of Information. Since 2021, when the Afghan Taliban regained power, militant activity has surged in Pakistan’s border provinces, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
A report by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) indicated that these two provinces remained the epicenters of violence in the second quarter of 2026, with KP experiencing the highest impact. The report revealed that KP and Balochistan accounted for nearly 96% of all fatalities from violence during this period. KP alone saw over 61% (475) of these deaths, while Balochistan contributed 34% (265). The provinces also experienced the majority of violent incidents, with KP registering 151 cases (57% of the national total) and Balochistan 94 cases (35%). Despite repeated international appeals for Afghanistan to prevent its soil from being used for terrorist activities, Kabul has yet to fulfill its commitments.
