RAWALPINDI: Field Marshal Asim Munir has directed the Pakistan Army to maintain its counterterrorism operations and strike what he described as India-backed militant groups “hard,” according to the military’s media wing.
During a visit to Corps Headquarters in Peshawar on Friday, the Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff was briefed on security conditions, ongoing operations, border management and the readiness of troops in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
Munir praised the morale and professionalism of officers and soldiers, and urged them to remain vigilant and prepared to respond to threats. He said the campaign against “India-sponsored terrorist outfits” would continue, adding that the military would target them wherever they were, the ISPR statement said.
He also paid tribute to those killed and injured in the conflict, saying the country would defeat militant groups with public support.
The visit followed a meeting of the Federal Apex Committee in Peshawar, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and attended by senior civilian and military officials, including Munir. Sharif said the government and military leadership were working to improve security and support development in the province. He announced a Rs160 billion development package.
The prime minister also referred to difficult decisions concerning law and order in KP, including proposals involving governor’s rule and emergency measures. He said the federal government would work with the military to restore peace and encourage development in areas affected by militancy.
Pakistan has reported a rise in militant violence, particularly in KP and Balochistan, since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021. Islamabad has repeatedly called on Kabul to prevent armed groups from using Afghan territory to launch attacks in Pakistan. The two countries have yet to resolve their dispute over militant groups operating from Afghanistan, despite several rounds of talks.
