Case filed against orphanage official after Multan teen’s killing

MULTAN: Police in Multan have filed a case against an orphanage official accused of sending 15-year-old Waseem Abbas to work without authorisation, days before the teenager was killed.

Waseem, who lived at an NGO-run orphanage, was reportedly placed with electrician Tauqeer Nazir to learn the trade. Police said the teenager wanted to leave the job because of alleged mistreatment. He was allegedly chased and struck by a car in Multan’s Royal Orchard housing society.

Nazir was arrested and remanded for four days. On Wednesday, he was killed in a reported exchange of fire with Punjab’s Crime Control Department near Bahawalpur. CCD official Irfan Akbar said police had tried to stop two men on a motorcycle, who allegedly opened fire as they fled.

The case against Shoaib, a member of the NGO’s governing body, was registered on a Labour Department official’s complaint. Police also filed a separate child-labour case against Nazir, alleging he had employed a minor.
