WEB DESK: Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has revealed that he plans to leave just one percent of his vast fortune to his children. He explained that his goal is for them to succeed on their own, rather than relying on inherited wealth.
In a recent podcast, Gates shared his thoughts: “Everyone must make their own decision on this matter. In my case, my children have been raised well and received a solid education. However, after I’m gone, they will inherit only one percent of my wealth because I have decided not to provide them with financial support.”
He continued, “I didn’t ask them to take over Microsoft. I want them to thrive on their own and find success in their own ways.”
This is a shift from his earlier statements, where Gates had mentioned that he would leave each of his children one million dollars as a gift, without any additional inheritance beyond that.
In his latest interview, Gates elaborated, “You don’t want your children to feel confused or entitled because of your support and affection. I believe it’s important to share your values with them early on, treat them equally, and provide them with the best opportunities to succeed in life.”
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Gates is currently worth $162 billion, meaning the one percent of his wealth that he plans to leave to his children would amount to $1.62 billion.
Despite his decision, Gates clarified that he would not leave his children destitute. He previously stated in an interview that his children would be provided with “a reasonable amount” of money, ensuring they would not face financial struggles.
Gates intends to donate the majority of his fortune to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which focuses on global health, poverty alleviation, and disease prevention, continuing his commitment to philanthropy.
