ATC Jails Islamabad DIG, imposes fine over delay in PTI protest case

ISLAMABAD: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Tuesday sentenced Islamabad Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Muhammad Jawad Tariq to one month in prison and fined him Rs100,000 for failing to submit the investigation challan in a case linked to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest held on October 4, 2024.

The verdict was issued by ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra, who expressed dissatisfaction over the continued delay in filing the investigation report despite multiple court directives. The court noted that the police had repeatedly failed to comply with its orders regarding submission of the challan.

Judge Sipra also observed that DIG Tariq did not appear before the court despite being summoned, prompting the court to award the sentence and financial penalty.

The case stems from a protest organized by PTI supporters in Islamabad on October 4 last year, after which a criminal case was registered at Margalla Police Station against several party leaders and activists.

Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan welcomed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent call for dialogue, describing political engagement as the most effective way to address national issues.

Speaking to the media, Barrister Gohar stressed the importance of tolerance and negotiations over confrontation. He urged all stakeholders to initiate meaningful talks and expressed concern over restrictions on meetings with PTI founder Imran Khan in prison.

He further called for allowing family members to meet the incarcerated PTI founder, arguing that such a step would help create a more positive political atmosphere. Emphasizing democratic values, Gohar said political opponents should not be sidelined or jailed, adding that the country needs dialogue and reconciliation rather than conflict.
