KARACHI: Investigators have reportedly detected traces of acid in the stomach and on parts of the body of businessman Mir Raza Ali, while forensic examination also found severe acid-related damage to his lungs, according to sources.
Sources said acid traces were also detected on Ali’s hands and feet, while his shirt reportedly contained traces of acid along with sweat believed to belong to another person.
As the investigation continues, police have sealed a guesthouse near the location where Ali’s body was found after declaring it a suspicious site. Six employees of the guesthouse have been detained and questioned, taking the total number of people held in connection with the case to 21.
Statements of the detained individuals, including Ali’s friends and business associates, have been recorded as investigators attempt to piece together the circumstances surrounding his death.
The latest findings emerged a day after Ali’s body was exhumed for a second post-mortem examination conducted by a medical board before it was reburied.
Second Post-Mortem Findings
According to the initial medical findings, the forensic examination addressed all 14 questions raised by Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed.
Sources said the report indicated that Ali had suffered a gunshot wound from the rear, while multiple injuries and marks of violence were found on his body. His ribs were reportedly fractured, with several injuries also observed on his head and face.
The IBA graduate was found dead in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Karachi, last month, a day after he was reported missing on July 28.
His father has maintained that his son was murdered and rejected suggestions that the death was a suicide.
Decision on Judicial Probe Deferred
Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar said the proposed judicial commission to investigate the case has been put on hold following a request from Mir Raza’s parents.
Lanjar said the government had initially decided to form a judicial commission headed by high court judges to ensure transparency. However, after the family expressed confidence in the newly constituted investigation team, it was decided that the same team would continue handling the probe.
The minister said the decision to establish the judicial commission has therefore been temporarily deferred.
Sharjeel Memon Seeks Action Over Social Media Claims
Meanwhile, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has approached the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) over what he described as a campaign of false and malicious allegations linking him and his son, Rawal Memon, to Ali’s death.
A complaint was submitted to the Deputy Director of the NCCIA Karachi Zone on August 9 through Memon’s lawyer, Advocate
Syeda Malaika Naqvi.
The complaint alleges that unidentified individuals are operating social media accounts, pages and groups to circulate defamatory material against Memon and his son.
According to the complaint, social media posts have alleged that the guesthouse near the crime scene was owned by Sharjeel Memon and claimed that Rawal travelled to London shortly after the incident and was later seen with a security guard.
Rawal, who is currently in London, rejected the allegations and described them as an organised smear campaign. He called for those responsible for spreading the claims to be identified and brought to justice.
The complaint also objected to social media claims suggesting that the medical board investigating the case had been changed abruptly, as well as allegations that Memon and his political party were attempting to shield suspects or interfere with the investigation.
Authorities are continuing to examine forensic evidence, statements and other leads as the investigation into Mir Raza Ali’s death progresses.
